it seems that for a 5-10 person, 188lbs is too much it doesn't feel right to me. My clothes aren't fitting as well as they used to, and I'm not happy about it. I'm the king of fad diets. I've done "Business Plan for the Body", "Body for Life", as well as "South Beach Diet", and "Weight Watchers" - online and group meetings. Inspired by my new friend @twonjosh 's recent weight loss and others, I've decided to start try at this again.
Take a look at the last 3 years of my weight for example, which I keep track of on Google Docs:
I've been all over the map, and I can' seem to keep it off for any amount of time. A few months ago, I started to swing the pendulm the other day, but I lost that momentum again.
Here's what I'm going to try and do (and be realistic) to start losing again, and as for keeping it off, I've still not figured that out completely. I downloaded "Lose It!" from the iTunes app store. I used to use it, but then stopped. This time, I'm using the calcualtion feature to hit 175 (next mini-goal). Based on my height and weight "My plan is to lost 1.5 lbs per week. My daily calorie budget is 1,847 calories. It will help me track this daily, weekly and monthly.
1) I'm going to set a bunch of mini goals for myself, and then track them each day/week/month for progress.
2) I'm going to track everything I eat. I learned from Weight Watchers that if you consciously write everything down you eat, you'll consider it more before you eat
3) Limit my alcolohol intake to lite beers, and only when necessary. I know going out with friends and brewery's will be tough, however I am going to try and be strong, and order other beverages that are fewer calories.
4) Plan ahead for work - I'ven been eating lots of Lean Cuisine Pizzas, and they taste great. They are high in sodium, and they don't quite fill me, up, but they sure are convient and easy to throw in the microwave during the work-week. Add a lite Yoplait Yogurt or 2 to the mix, and I just might make it throught the day
5) Here's the new one I think will help make this extra fun: I'm going to get a cheap bathroom scale and bring it to work. I'm going to inspire other co-workers who are also trying to lose to document their weight (or their + / - amount if embarassed) on the whiteboard, and track towards a goal, once per week. I found that for some reason, the weekly weight watchers meetings where we all had to "weigh-in" each week added a lot of subconscious pressure to me. Adding a fun social element to my progress with my friends and co-workers will certainly help keep a little friendly competition going :)
6) Add dedicated workouts to my calendar during the work week. I'm lucky enough to have a manager that is very supportive of staying in shape, and I don't think it would be a problem for her if I disapear for an hour a few times per week to hit the gym as long as I'm getting my other responsibilities done.
7) Find a workout - buddy (@zoosnack, @prgully , @roopeshsheth @twonjosh , @tylervsd, @usercasemachine are you reading this?) If I can get my friends to commit to meeting me at the Gym on specific dates and times, or planned evening bikerides there's the psychological pressure to show up, and the pressure to not leave your friend hanging. [update: just booked Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at noon]. See ya'll at the intuit Gym if you're in this with me!
8) Training programs - pre-pay : Why waste $$$ on this? I am thinking if I pre-pay for some exercise classes and then don't show up, I would not want to waste money so I would show up. (thanks @tylervsd for the tip!).
9) Although I bought Wii Fit and played it only a couple of times, I think forcing myself to try it more, or getting more of a fun cardio type of wii fit game could make it more fun too. Jogging in place for 30 minutes really hurt my calves for the next week :/ - need to find something fun here that gets my heart beating.
10) Signing up for 5K in the near future. The psychological pressure to not run a race with a lousey time (or have to walk) always helps me out. [update: just signed up for the 2009 Coronado Independence Day Run!] - who's with me?!?!
Come follow me on my journey to get back in shape. Please feel free to comment on what worked for you, or cheer me on :)
